BRISBANE FESTIVAL ~ September 8th – 29th 2012

21 Sep Brisbane Airport International Lantern Garden

This year’s Brisbane Festival is on until the 29th September, where it ends with the big bang of Sunsuper Riverfire!

If you are in the vicinity of the Brisbane River, you’d be a fool to miss this spectacular event! For those on a tight budget, there are plenty of free activities and sights to marvel at across South Bank.

Every night from 7pm, sit back, relax, and enjoy the Santos GLNG City of Lights laser and special effects show from the Santos GLNG Lounge in the cultural forecourt at South Bank. Later on, wander over to the Wunder Bar, at QPAC’s Cascade Court, for a drink or two and some cool tunes.

Make your way back to the Cultural Forecourt to take in the beautiful arrangement of the Brisbane Airport International Lantern Garden, and if you have the stamina, make your way into The Courier-Mail Spiegeltent’s Garden Bar to take in the Festival vibe.

Over the other side of South Bank (Sidon Street end, River Quay), the Golden Casket Light Sphere is a sight to see with its arrangement of mirrors and feature lights.

Tonight (Friday 21st September), make your way to the Roma Street Parklands for an evening of Symphony Under the Stars performed by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and friends. Featuring some well known classical pieces by the likes of Verdi, Mendelssohn, Elgar, Dvorak, Bizet Rossini and more.

So drive, walk, City Cat, train, bus, ride, or taxi your way to the Brisbane CBD and river for all this and more. Everything above is free so there is no excuse for missing out on this amazing event, (excluding transportation and food & beverages). You have until next weekend, so get out there and celebrate your city now!

HOME FESTIVAL ~ Saturday August 25th 2012

31 Aug Cubby House Chaos

Last weekend I attended the Home Festival for the first time.

The kitchie festival, that celebrates all things about the home, was held in Raymond Park at Kangaroo Point, just behind The Pineapple Hotel.  A great festival for families and sustainability enthusiasts, the Home Festival hosts an array of free (or gold coin donation) activities for all ages in addition to some tasty organic and healthy treats.

Main Stage Home Festival The Bike Bus

We enjoyed a hunt through the suitcase rummage and Mr Moo loved the Mamas Corner with its home-made rain-makers, shakers and bubbles. The Bike Bus was a hit with most, and nearly as popular as the build your own cardboard cubby house area (which we were the masters of I might add). The live music was great! We enjoyed tunes by Sabrosa Son Sistema and Citizen John, (remember those names).

All in all, I would definitely rate the Home Festival as one of the memorable Brissy festivas I’ve been to. Its free, friendly, fun, welcoming, colourful, and eco friendly. A festival on the grow I suspect so keep an eye out for it in 2013 to enjoy the moderate crowd levels while it lasts.

REGIONAL FLAVOURS ~ July 21st & 22nd 2012

21 Jul Our Kitchen Garden

Delectable: a celebration of ground to table

This year’s Regional Flavours at South Bank has proven to be a hit so far. Many of Queensland’s top producers have made their way to this fantastic event, that is currently in its fourth year.

Little Stanley Street and neighbouring South Bank lawns play host to this bustling festival, where one can indulge in the best food and wine from all different Queensland regions including: the Granite Belt; Lockyer Valley; South Burnett; Maleny; Gympie and much much more.

So if you don’t have any plans tomorrow, or even if you do, I implore you to drive, walk, city cat, or even hitch hike your way to the Regional Flavours. It is well worth the effort – Supporting Queensland producers never tasted so good!
